At Metro Vein Centers in the Detroit, MI area, our vein doctors have a wide variety of minimally invasive varicose vein treatment options to draw upon in creating your most effective treatment plan. Although we do follow some general guidelines, such as beginning with lifestyle changes and compression stockings for milder cases of varicose veins and leg swelling, your vein care is planned around you specifically.

Choosing Among the Varicose Vein Treatment Options

Our vein doctors know that there is no one-size-fits-all set of varicose vein treatment options. That’s why we conduct a thorough exam, take your medical history, discuss your lifestyle habits and view your blood flow with Doppler ultrasound. Only after collecting all this information will our vascular surgeons recommend your unique plan of care. There is really no other effective way to provide comprehensive vein care for our patients.

More Serious Vein Problems

Most people with varicose veins also have other types of vein disease or additional symptoms. Along with varicose veins, it’s very common to have spider veins. In some cases, our vein specialists may uncover more serious vascular problems in the deeper veins, such as DVT or deep vein thrombosis (blood clot). In that case, the DVT would receive immediate treatment–and varicose veins would be treated later. We would likely use anti-coagulant medication to help dissolve the DVT blood clot and prevent it from growing. To break up stubborn, more dangerous clots we could use a thrombolytic, clot-busting medication. We might also place a filtration device into your vena cava (large abdominal vein) to prevent the clot from passing through to your lungs.

Milder Vascular Disease

If you have both spider veins and varicose veins, essentially a minor case, our vein doctor might use a laser to zap away the spider veins from your face, chest area and/or legs. Then, perhaps in the same visit, s/he could also use sclerotherapy (Injections to collapse varicose veins in your legs), treating both vein problems in one visit. Even in minor cases of vein disease, you may need a couple of repeat visits to banish all your spider and varicose veins. In fact, you may need a few more treatments, at long intervals throughout your life, because if you have a tendency to develop varicose veins, they will typically keep on forming. Regular visits to your vein doctor as needed should keep most cases of varicose veins at bay.
