What are Varicose Veins and Spider Veins?

Varicose veins are veins in the legs that are twisted and enlarged, making them more visible on the outside of the skin. A mild variation of varicose veins is called spider veins, which tend to form more of a web-like appearance but are often a symptom of underlying vein disease that progresses over time. About 30% to 60% of adults suffer from some form of varicose veins at one point in their lives.

Symptoms of varicose veins include:

  • Dark blue or purple veins that are visible through the skin
  • Veins that appear like they are twisted or bulging
  • Heavy feelings in the legs
  • Leg throbbing, swelling or muscle cramping
  • Pain after prolonged sitting or standing
  • Itchiness around the sides of your veins
  • Skin discoloration around the veins

Varicose veins are a common health condition caused by weak or damaged vein walls and valves, called venous insufficiency. When your arteries pump blood from your heart to the rest of your tissues, your veins bring it back so that it can be recirculated. But unlike arteries, veins can come under strain because they’re constantly working against gravity—and they can become more aggravated with high blood pressure. This is why pregnancy, obesity and old age are all risk factors for varicose veins. Some people find they are more likely to get varicose veins than others due to genetics.

When Should I Be Concerned About Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are not just cosmetic - because they are a sign of poor circulation in the legs, they are a medical condition that should be evaluated by a board-certified vein specialist. Treatment may be recommended if your symptoms are affecting everyday activities, the veins are red, tender when you press them, they easily bleed or if you are experiencing swelling, heaviness or veins itchiness or skin discoloration.

Our vein doctors will be able to assess and diagnose the severity of your varicose veins as well as find the best avenue of treatment for your unique case.

Some people wonder if they can treat varicose veins at home. Walking, leg elevation, a healthy diet, avoiding long periods of sitting or standing and wearing compression stockings can help temporarily relieve symptoms of varicose veins and venous insufficiency, the disease is progressive and worsen over time, so early treatment is often recommended.

What Types of Treatment for Varicose Veins Is Available?

The best modern treatment for varicose veins is simple, fast and affordable. The latest options use a combination of laser, radio frequency and micro foam injections to treat varicose veins with little downtime or discomfort. Based on your doctors’ recommendation, treatment options may include

Laser Treatments (known as endovenous laser ablation)

Laser treatments use a minimally invasive laser beam to treat severe varicose veins, under the guidance of ultrasound technology. It requires local anesthesia and can usually be performed as an outpatient procedure in under an hour. This treatment works by heating up affected areas of the vein until they close. The surgeon inserts a small optic fiber directly into the vein to direct the laser at the damaged valve. Afterward, the vein starts healing immediately, and the blood supply is rerouted through healthier veins.

Radiofrequency Treatment (known as radiofrequency ablation)

Radiofrequency treatment uses heat to close affected veins using radio waves instead of a laser. The doctor inserts a catheter, which emits these radio waves, into the affected vein under the guidance of ultrasound. Once the vein is closed, the blood supply is rerouted, and it is reabsorbed into the body. Only local anesthesia is needed, and the whole procedure typically takes less than an hour.

Micro Foam Sclerotherapy

Ideal for spider veins and smaller varicose veins, Micro Foam Sclerotherapy takes about ten minutes to perform per session, and no anesthesia is required. A vein doctor injects a medicated solution into your affected leg veins. In response, they immediately close down and start to be reabsorbed in the body. Sometimes more than one treatment is required to achieve the desired cosmetic results. Larger veins can also be treated using ultrasound-guided injection with microform solutions.

Micro Foam Varithena®

Like sclerotherapy, Micro Foam Varithena uses medicated foam injected into the leg veins. The doctor injects foam through a tiny catheter, and the foam fills up and treats the affected areas of the vein.  It requires local anesthesia, and the procedure is typically completed in under an hour. Most patients resume normal activities within 24 hours.
